The wrong way to punish teen bullies

April 8, 2010, 4:11 pm — Saskia (Uncategorized)

Who in their right mind thinks that it’s OK to harass teenage girls by telling them they should be raped, or that they should kill themselves?

Although these particular teenage girls are potentially guilty of some pretty terrible crimes–they allegedly abused and bullied a classmate until she committed suicide–I don’t think that anyone ever deserves to be raped as a punishment.

According to an article on Salon.com

“The sitesĀ feature photos of the teens, links to news coverage of the case and thriving message boards that host violent rape imagery, degrading sexual commentary, attacks on their appearance, name-calling (“whore” and “slut,” are favorites) and appeals for the girls to kill themselves just like Prince did (one visitor offered to supply a rope). Some have even taken to posting the teenagers’ home addresses and links to their MySpace pages.”

This type of response is just so wrong!

If those teens did bully and harass Phoebe Prince to the point where she felt that taking her own life was the only recourse, then they will hopefully be punished in a court of law.

None of these teens, however, should be raped in retaliation. And the (presumably) adult commenters should be ashamed of themselves for engaging in the exact same type of hateful, violent and disgusting taunting that the teens themselves are currently being charged with crimes for.
