Governor Cuomo Signs Comprehensive Gun Reform Legislation, NY SAFE ACT

January 16, 2013, 3:24 am — admin (Uncategorized)

This statement is reprinted from it’s original publication, infection ampoule riginally issued in the Alliance Weekly Digest on January 3, order tooth 2013.  It is being re-printed, here,

The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault Board and staff decry the fatal assault and gang rape of a young physiotherapy student in Delhi, India, who died 12 days later of her injuries.  We join the international community in condemning this unspeakably savage and senseless act, and in speaking out about violence against women and children worldwide.

We stand in solidarity with the courageous women and men in India who are gathering in public protest, and join our voice to theirs in calling for an end to victim-blaming.  The Alliance strives to understand the social norms and environmental and institutional factors that enable rape, and to address policies and environmental factors that promote and permit sexual violence to occur.

We envision a world free from sexual violence and seek justice through primary prevention.

The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault praises Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature’s quick action to close loopholes on guns and ammunition in this state.  In addition to supporting increased control of the sales of guns, cialis 40mg
assault weapons and ammunition, diagnosis
the Alliance supported  the proposal to create a state-wide standard for review and determination of whether gun permit holders continue to be eligible for permits.  Many counties do not review issued permits despite conduct by a gun holder that might make him or her ineligible to legally possess a gun.

Sexual Assault is a crime of coercion.  The perpetrator can be a stranger, side effects
and acquaintance, or an intimate partner.  In every case, the presence of a gun increases the danger to the survivor.  In 10% of stranger rapes and 8% of rapes by ex-spouses, the offenders used a gun.  (Lawrence A. Greenfeld, Sex Offenses and Offenders: An Analysis of Data on Rape and Sexual Assault, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, February 1997, NCJ-163392) The Alliance joined others to back this legislation that will help to keep guns out of the hands of those who use them against victims of crimes and applauds Governor Cuomo for providing leadership on this issue.
