FACTSHEET:
Overview of Family Court for Service Providers

New protections are now available in Family Court for young victims of domestic violence / dating abuse! Obtaining an order of protection (restraining order) is now a much simpler process. Day One has produced two fliers (one geared toward youth and one geared toward service providers) describing this new law and the rights of young victims who can now file for civil protective orders. Our goal is to raise awareness about the new law among both youth and professionals, so it might be a good idea to post the flyer in a common space.

Christine Fowley, long-time director of the St. Vincent's Rape Crisis Program, and social worker/therapist Edwina Kee celebrate their new home with the St. Luke's-Roosevelt Crime Victims Treatment Center
What a difference a day can make. The St. Vincent Hospital Rape Crisis Program officially closed on May 31st and reopened the next day as the West Village Division of the Crime Victims Treatment Center of St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.

With the closing of St. Vincent's hospital this spring, the fate of the West Village's only rape crisis program was in serious doubt. Like other hospital-based programs, the RCP at St. Vincent was semi-autonomous. The program used government grants and fundraising/donations to pay for staff salaries and some of the overhead costs, while depending on the hospital for its office space and related costs. The closure of the hospital left the RCP without a facility and sponsor.

Two phenomenal women from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Crime Victims Treatment Center stepped forward to save the St. Vincent Hospital Rape Crisis Program-Dr. Victoria Sharp, Director of the Center for Comprehensive Care at St. Luke's-Roosevelt, and Susan Xenarios, Director of the Crime Victims Treatment Center (as well as a founder of the Alliance and current Board co-chair). Refusing to allow a historic and much-needed community program to die, St. Luke's- Roosevelt adopted the lower Manhattan program. As a result, the current staff will continue to provide a myriad of services to survivors of sexual assault.

Started in 1977, St. Vincent's RCP was one of the first hospital- based rape crisis programs in the country. Its dedicated and experienced staff provides a full range of counseling and healing services for survivors of childhood sexual abuse and/ or sexual assault. Until the end of April, the RCP also had a group of dedicated volunteer advocates who provided 24/7 advocacy and crisis counseling in the hospital's ER.

Susan Xenarios, who started the St. Luke's program in 1977, at the same time as the St. Vincent program launched, could not allow her sister program to close. She teamed up with Dr. Sharp to formulate a rescue plan. With St. Vincent's closure, Dr. Sharp opened the West Village Division of the Center for Comprehensive Care, and recruited some of St. Vincent's HIV doctors and clinic staff to enhance HIV services in lower Manhattan. She arranged for the former St. Vincent's RCP staff to become a part of the Division in the West Village.

"Talk about sisters coming to the rescue," said Chris Fowley, the RCP's long-time Program Director. "Things are a bit chaotic right now as we work to close our St. Vincent identity and merge into St. Luke's-Roosevelt, and also work with government funders to move the grants to our new home. But when all the shuffling is done, the Crime Victims Treatment Center, West Village Division will continue to offer compassionate care to survivors as we continue our work to end sexual violence. More news to follow on our Adoption Party to celebrate the merger!"

Along with the new West Village Division of the Center for Comprehensive Care (CCC), the RCP will be staying in their current home at 36 Seventh Avenue for the next six months and then moving with the CCC to their new home in the neighborhood when it is ready. The RCP also has a new e-mail address: WestVillage@cvtc-slr.org and will be getting a new phone number in the next few weeks.
