Sexual Assault Statistics for New York City

The Alliance has identified that basic statistical information about sexual violence in NYC is not readily available or accessible. We also know that statistics are important. Statistics demonstrate the need for resources. Without them, it is difficult to make our case about the needs of sexual violence survivors and our communities. It is also difficult to address sexual violence as a public health and human rights issue that can be prevented. As a first step, we have collected the information we could obtain for 2008 to provide a starting point for addressing this issue.

City Statistics

FDNY transports of rape to area hospitals

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported 991 transports of rape victims to city hospitals.

Emergency Room Patients

27 New York City Emergency Hospital Departments (52% response rate) reported 1,367 patients treated for sexual assault in 2008.

New York State Crime Victim's Board

The New York State Crime Victim's Board (CVB) paid over $1.7 million dollars in 2008 for 2,183 forensic rape exam claims. The breakdown by borough is as follows:

Division of Criminal Justice Services Data
The Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) provided police department reports, as well as legal disposition information for New York City.

In 2008 the New York City Police Department (NYPD) received 890 reports of 1st degree rape
In 2008, DCJS reported 944 arrests for 1st-3rd Degree Rape.
